Free Knitting Pattern - Beginner Colour Block Hat

Jessica Bodner

Hello friends!

Autumn is approaching, and as knitters, many of us are starting to prep and prepare for the upcoming season!

I wanted to share this quick and easy knit hat pattern with you all.  I knit up this design initially as a way to use up some partial skeins of my favorite super bulky yarn.  My favorite yarn to use for these hats is Malabrigo Rasta, and you can shop all of their colours HERE.  Rather than doing a basic colour-block design, I decided to try a few rows of alternating colours, and it resulted in a classic, simple, and fun colour block hat.  You all seemed interested in the pattern, so here it is!

I’ve written it up in Adult (Child, Toddler) sizes, with the Adult pattern as the main pattern, followed by the Child and Toddler instructions in brackets, in that order.

I usually recommend my adult size fits a 21-23” head circumference, Child (3-10 year) fits 19-21”, and Toddler (1-3 year) fits 17-19”.  The nice thing about this design, is it works up in increments of two stitches around, so you can easily adjust the width, or add more to the length, as you desire your hat to fit, and depending on your gauge.

Supplies Needed:

  • Approximately 110g (95g, 75g) of total super bulky yarn split into two colours. You can adjust where you transition from one colour to the next based on how much yarn you have.  You could even use three colours and do two transition sections!  Yarn weight needed will likely vary depending on the brand of yarn you are using.  These weights were calculated using Malabrigo Rasta Super Bulky Yarn
  • US 15 (10.00mm) 16 inch circular knitting needles
  • Tapestry needle
  • Faux Fur Pom Pom
  • Stitch marker

Gauge: 2 inch stockinette square =  4.5 sts x 8 rows

Abbreviations:

K – knit stitch

P – purl stitch

St(s) – stitch(es)

A – Use yarn colour A

B – Use yarn colour B

R(s) – row(s)

K2tog – knit two stitches together

Instructions:

Using Colour A:  Cast on 38 (36, 34) Sts using the long tail cast on.  Don’t cast on too tightly. Place stitch marker.

Brim:

Using Colour A:  K1, P1 for 8 (7,6) Rs.

Body:

Using Colour A**: K around for a TOTAL of 19 (17, 16 ) more rs.

**At some point during the body, you will transition to your second colour, colour B.  When you are ready to transition, make sure to have at least 2 yards of colour A remaining to complete the transition section.  Follow the following instructions for your transition phase:

Transition Phase: (please note these 3 rows are part of your total number of body rows as listed in the previous step).  Remember to knit LOOSELY as you alternate colours so that these rows don’t pull tighter than the rest of your work.

R1: K1B, K1A

R2: K1A, K1B

R3: K1B, K1A

Cut any remainder of colour A, leaving a tail to weave in.  Then continue the remainder of your body rows (and the decrease) using colour B.

Decrease:

R1: k2, k2tog - repeat around (for 1-3 year, and adult sizes you will have 2 sts left, k those two sts)

R2: k1, k2tog - repeat around (for 1-3year, and adult sizes you will have 2 sts left, knit these two sts together)

R3: k2tog - repeat around. If you have 1 st left on your needles, just k that st.

Weave in all ends, attach your pom, and you are done!  I hope you like this simple colour block pattern – please let me know and don’t forget to tag us in your photos so we can see your hats!!  Happy knitting!!
